Lorbero Fizzlespark is a gnomish mage character used by Lorbero in Prologue. Though the character's stories and adventures within the phases has varied considerably, his basic biographical history and personality remains the same throughout.

Appearance and Personality[]

Like all gnomes, Lorbero's physical stature is anything but imposing. Standing less than three feet tall, he appears short even by gnomish standards. His chosen path of magical study has also lessened whatever physical attributes biology may have granted by chance, as his body is much more prone to fat than muscle. Though his wrinkled face marks him as a gnome of advanced age, his wide eyes show little sign of aging, still retaining the glimmer of childish curiosity. His appearance also contains two noteworthy features: a large beard and his wide-brimmed red hat. Both hold special significance to Lorbero in ways that often seem strange to others. A gnarled wooden staff is also a constant companion, though Lorbero seems to care little for its well-being.

Descriptions of Lorbero’s personality by others typically fall within three distinct categories: calm and friendly, eccentric and intelligent, and simply mad. Each one has merit, and it would be more accurate to say that Lorbero’s personality encompasses all three. He is well-read and knowledgeable on topics both magical and mundane, and delights in social conversation. Lorbero is known to often break uncomfortable silences with the phrase “did you know…” which is usually the beginning of a lecture that is rarely interesting or relevant to those directed at. Like many gnomes, Lorbero is quick to befriend those around him – though he often has trouble remembering names – and rarely holds a grudge for long. He is sensitive when it comes to comments regarding his beard or hat and often constructs entire conversations around an attempt to receive a compliment on either. An imaginative thinker, he generally has little trouble preparing sophisticated plans or arrangements, although these tend to be more elaborate and complicated than is appropriate.

Though trained and skilled in magic, Lorbero rarely utilizes these strengths in combat. Though the term cowardly may not be accurate it is obvious that he prefers talking or running to fighting, a quality that sometimes frustrates his allies. Whether this is caused by a desire for self-preservation or a genuine fear of violence is unknown. His tolerance for stress situations is cause for worry, as he often behaves erratically and irrationally in these cases. Lorbero also possesses a tendency to refer to himself in the third person when speaking and when pressed denies doing so, even when it should be obvious. While many believe this quirk to be simply a case of an overdeveloped love of hearing his own name spoken, the fact that he only seems to do so while in the company of his trademark hat suggests that the reason may be more complex than assumed.

Biographical Information[]

Lorbero's birth was not an event of great significance. Born the eighth child of a large but impoverished gnomish family located deep within the snowy hills of Dun Morogh, his early years were mostly spent fighting with his siblings for attention and reading alone in the bed he shared with his six brothers. Lorbero's father was an inventor renowned for his bad luck and stubbornness, a combination that made him difficult to like and even harder to live with. His father was also infamous for his hatred of the arcane arts, fuelled by a humiliating incident in the past, which was the main reason for his decision take his family to live apart from the much more magically tolerant city of Gnomeregan. As such, it did not take long for Lorbero to become an unwanted individual within his family after he exhibited an inherent talent for magic by accidentally setting his father's workbench on fire. Two weeks after the accident Lorbero was sent away to live with his ageing relative Norbert Cogflame, the family's reclusive pariah who was also a local practitioner of magic.

Together the two gnomes developed a productive master and apprentice relationship. Lorbero enjoys telling tales of the fantastic adventures he had during these years, perhaps overlooking the fact that the majority of his time with Norbert was spent keeping the house in order, cooking, and repeating simple spells to help develop control. Lorbero would spend the next few decades with the reclusive mage, only leaving once Norbert, old even before Lorbero was sent to him, died in his sleep. Without any desire to return to his family and lacking any real connection to gnomish society, Lorbero packed his things and headed for the mageocracy of Dalaran.

Expecting a glorious reception, Lorbero was left disappointed once it was made clear that there was no place set aside for him in Dalaran society. His magical powers and knowledge, developed in unconventional ways and without any understanding of the underlying theories, did not leave a good impression with the other mages. Eventually Lorbero was able to find employ in one of the grand libraries found within the city, settling into a custodial position. Within the library's towering shelves and numerous teetering spires of books brushing the ceiling, Lorbero found a new home. It was possible to go days without any contact with the outside world, and Lorbero was happy to dedicate himself to the lonely studying of the knowledge that surrounded him, usually spending the night in a darkened corner of the archives before awakening and continuing his research.

History[]

Phase A/B Timeline[]

Lorbero settled on Theramore Isle for period of time, joining the ranks of the Magi there and becoming a recognized citizen despite never holding a place of residence. His stay was marked by little excitement, with Lorbero spending most of his days either studying in the Island's library or entertaining guests at the inn with stories. With the help of Avellia Daeris, Lorbero founded the Theramore Educational Association for the Creation of Higher Minds Everywhere - also known as "T.E.A.C.H.M.E." - which sought to provide an educational experience to both the Island's citizens and its many visitors. His stay on Theramore was never meant to be permanent, however, and before long he was on a ship back to the Eastern Kingdoms.

After a brief wandering period Lorbero enlisted in the Argent Dawn organization at Chillwind Camp, located on the outskirts of the Alterac Mountains. Here Lorbero was instrumental in helping to organize and coordinate the Dawn's magical arm at Chillwind, bringing him to the attention of the group's leadership. Soon after he was promoted and given diplomatic, training and military responsibilities within the group.

Old Hatreds Timeline[]

Swept up in the excitement resulting from High Tinker Gelbin Mekkatorque's call that all able-bodied gnomes seeking adventure were to gather at Nethergarde Keep, Lorbero soon found himself an enlisted member of the Adamantine Cog. Once the expedition had reached the shattered world of Outland, Lorbero was given command of the group's mages in the position of High Technomage by Skibb Bunkerbuster, the commander of the Cog. Operating in this capacity, Lorbero participated in the Battle of Falcon Watch, the Invasion of Terrokar Forest, the Assualt on Zeth'Gor, and the Defense of Allerian Stronghold. During his time on Outland Lorbero also took up numerous diplomatic missions to Shattrath City, culminating in a planned major diplomatic event that was postponed indefinitely after the humans of the 10th Legion came under concentrated assualt from the forces of the Illidari.

Sandbox Timeline[]

Putting an exact finger on Lorbero's activities during this period have proven to be extremely difficult. Reports have been given that placed him as an active presence in Stormwind City, but these are called into question when taking credible sightings of him in areas as far away as the Barrens in Kalimdor into account. It can be assumed that, given sightings of him in a wide variety of areas, Lorbero embarked on a mission of exploration within this timeline, though the details of these travels unfortunately remain patchy and disconnected.
